Shinigami (死神?, "death kami") is the personification of death that evolved in Japan, having been imported to Japan from Europe during the Meiji period. The term shinigami may also be used more loosely to refer to any death deity.
In Bleach (Japanese anime), shinigami, or soul reapers/death gods, are souls that protect the human world from Hollows(Ghosts that have been corrupted by loneliness and become evil spirits) and that lead people to Soul Society, a place reigned by souls in another dimension.
We decided to name the guild Shinigami after the "Death Gods" featured in Bleach. Their purpose is to eradicate all evil from Earth and protect humankind... a nice goal to be sure Their power comes from their soul, which is in part personified through their swords, known as Zampaktou. With these swords they can fight evil (obviously) but also save lost souls by sending them to a safe dimension, where the Shinigami originate from. They have many different personalities and attitudes, but are ultimately united in their goal to protect.
